I have been reading biographies of the American presidents in oder and just finished Lincoln. One of the things that has struck me is how the 3/5 compromise in the constitution created an evil and corroding thread in our history thate required several subsequent compromises to "save the union" and when compromise was no longer possible, the deadliest war in American history.
