The terminology here it telling. An alcoholic who maintains a job is a "functioning alcoholic." One who maintains a good job is "high functioning." I was also one of the latter. It was a curse, and I truly wish my alcoholism had brought me down earlier in life so that I'd spent fewer years merely functioning. Sobriety has meant living, thriving, and flourishing; things that were foreign to me while drinking -- functioning or otherwise.
