Until my recent retirement I was a lawyer and alcoholic. I also used the term 'alcoholic' as a way to fight the stigma. When I was feeling aggressive in the presence of politicians or others who shaped social policy I would sometimes change it to "I am in long-term recovery from alcoholism and addiction. I have money and I vote." The message was intended to be that aspiring influencers who did not support humanitarian approaches to addiction would get neither one of those things from me.
